Landing in June of each year the LGBTQ+ PRIDE month attracts millions of people around the world to join in on the festivities. The celebration varies from place to place, for instance, in New Zealand, Auckland actually celebrates Pride Month in February, whereas Christchurch and Wellington celebrate it in March. Malta celebrates in September whilst Australia celebrates in February. So although Pride is mostly celebrated in June, many countries have adapted their celebrations to better suit their local contexts.
New York City, USA – Where Pride was Born
This is where it all began, the Big Apple hosts one of the vibrant Pride parades on the planet, and guess what? It’s not just about the parade – there are plenty of concerts, parties, and enough glitter to light up the night sky. Interestingly, the use of the term “Pride” in English as a reclaimed word of empowerment emerged prominently here. Once used to shame, it became a badge of honour following the 1969 Stonewall riots, marking a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ linguistic and cultural history.

São Paulo, Brazil – Samba ’til Sunrise
The biggest in the world! Attracting a staggering 3-5 million people each year. Brazil knows how to bring the heat, and São Paulo Pride is no exception. With millions of people flooding the streets, this parade is a non-stop carnival of colour, music, and samba magic. In Portuguese, “orgulho” means pride, and during Pride, orgulho LGBTQIA+ becomes a powerful phrase of self-affirmation across Brazil’s diverse communities.

Madrid, Spain – La Fiesta del Orgullo
Madrid can certainly throw a party From the stunning parade to the legendary High Heel Race (yes, you read that right), this Spanish fiesta is an absolute must-see. Pride celebrations are known as “Orgullo”, particularly in Madrid, where the Spanish word for Pride holds significant linguistic power, as it is proudly displayed through signs, chants, and social media campaigns across the country. It’s a word once whispered that now echoes across Plaza de Colón in celebration.

Toronto, Canada – Maple Leaf Pride
Oh, Canada, Toronto Pride is one of the biggest and most diverse celebrations in Canada, with 22 blocks closed to traffic. Everything from parades to parties to drag brunches, the city’s celebrations continue to attract visitors from near and far! Canada is officially bilingual, and Fierté, the French word for Pride, is prominently used in Quebec and throughout national events, reflecting both linguistic inclusivity and cultural celebration.

Cape Town, South Africa – Rainbow Nation Vibes
South Africa’s capital excels at showcasing its colours during Pride. Despite the ongoing political challenges, the event plays a crucial role in advocating LGBTQ+ rights and creating a community of activists. From the vibrant parade to the glamorous Pink Ball, Cape Town Pride is a celebration of diversity, love, and equality. South Africa is home to 11 official languages, and Pride celebrations often incorporate phrases from isiXhosa, isiZulu, and Afrikaans, making it a truly multilingual expression of love and liberation.

Sydney, Australia – Down Under Divas
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the stuff of legends. This fabulous fiesta has attracted stars like Cher, Kylie Minogue, Cyndi Lauper, and the late George Michael. In Australia, Pride celebrations often reclaim and celebrate local slang. The term “Mardi Gras” was chosen deliberately in 1978 to avoid police attention at the time, but it’s now proudly synonymous with queer celebration and flamboyance. Aussie Pride is loud, proud, and unmistakably unique.
